The Comet is Coming plus Alabaster deplume

Monday 1 April, Sage Two, 8pm

Mercury Music Prize nominated band, The Comet is Coming, featuring Sons of Kemet’s, Shabaka Hutchings, debut music from their forthcoming release Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery.

 

In the aftermath of widespread sonic destruction what sounds remain? Who will lead the survivors to new sound worlds? Who will chart the new frontier? In a warehouse somewhere in London 2013, a meeting would take place between three musical cosmonauts. They would pool their energies to build a vessel powerful enough to transport any party into outer space.

 

It is after the end of the world, the stage is a spacecraft, the mic is an accelerator, brace yourself for The Comet is Coming.

Stuart Maconie: Jarrow Road to the Deep South

Thursday 4 April, Sage Two, 8pm 

In October 2016, writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie walked 300 miles from Jarrow to London retracing the famous Jarrow Crusade 80 years on, through a divided, complex country that echoes 1936 in many ways.

 

From choral evensong to curry house, from austerity to affluence, from Wearside to Westminster, join him on an entertaining, impassioned, enlightening journey through Britain then and now.

Gabrielle plus Jahméne and AMiR

Friday 5 April, Sage One, 7pm

Gabrielle will be performing songs from her new album and showcasing her signature hits.

 

Under My Skin charted in the UK charts at #7, her highest charting release since Rise topped the charts in 2000. Under My Skin is Gabrielle’s first studio album in 11 years and marks 25 years since the release of her debut single, Dreams.

 

Gabrielle is one of the UK’s most successful British singer-songwriters, a two-time BRIT Award winner, receiving the Best British Breakthrough Act in 1994 and the Best British Female Solo Artist in 1997. Gabrielle has also won various MOBO Awards and an Ivor Novello for Outstanding Song Collection.

Ward Thomas plus The Wandering Hearts

Saturday 6 April, Sage One, 7.30pm

Rising UK stars Ward Thomas, 24 year-old twin sisters Catherine and Lizzy, have announced a UK tour to tie in with the release of their jubilant new single Never Know, taken from their eagerly anticipated forthcoming album Restless Minds.

 

Catherine and Lizzy featured in the BBC Radio 1 documentary Beyond Nashville, presented by Scott Mills, exploring Country Music’s extraordinary success in the UK charts. The documentary explored how the genre had changed and grown on both sides of the pond. Beyond Nashville is available on BBC Radio1’s iPlayer.

Bill Laurance

Saturday 6 April, Sage Two, 8pm

Three times Grammy-winning, world-renowned multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, dubbed a jazz maestro by The Guardian, Bill Laurance is also a member of the phenomenon that is Snarky Puppy.

 

2018 saw Bill exploring his first love, the piano, with the recording of a solo album entitled Cables to be released in spring 2019. The album puts Bill’s focus on the piano and electronics in a further exploration of the meeting of Classical and Jazz.

There’s loving someone who’s out of your league – and then there’s Semele, who’s got her eye on the King of the Gods himself. It can’t end well: but meanwhile Handel’s 1744 dramatic entertainment tells her story in music of gripping theatricality and colour.

 

The English Concert make their annual trip to Carnegie Hall via Gateshead this year – this concert performance is not to be missed.

Folkworks: Jim Moray and Musicians

Sunday 7 April, Sage Two, 8pm

Jim Moray is amongst England’s finest interpreters of traditional song. His relentlessly innovative recordings can truly be said to have changed the sound of folk music since the early 2000s, and he has won fans and admirers far outside of the folk scene without ever betraying his traditional roots.

 

A five-time BBC Folk Award winner, his songs have been featured in a season finale of Grey’s Anatomy, he has appeared on-screen singing a specially composed song for Dr Who spin-off Class, and he has presented documentaries on traditional music for BBC Radio 3.
